AI and Large Language Model Processing

Athena's analysis features are powered by third-party artificial-intelligence providers. When you run an analysis, we transmit the following to the AI provider in order to generate the result:

  • The content of the news stories in your feed that match your selected filters
  • Your saved analysis prompts (presets)
  • Any ad-hoc questions or instructions you type, exactly as written
  • The filters applied to the analysis (topics, companies, sources, and date ranges)

By default, analyses are processed by Google Cloud Vertex AI (Gemini models). When a non-Google model is configured or selected for an analysis, the request is routed through OpenRouter, Inc. to the relevant model provider.

Requests to these providers are authenticated using Athena's own service credentials; we do not send your name, email address, or account identifiers to AI providers. However, the text of prompts and questions is transmitted as written, so we recommend that you do not include personal information in analysis prompts. Content sent to these providers is handled in accordance with each provider's terms and data policies and is used solely to generate the analysis you requested.

Connecting Athena to Anthropic's Claude

You may optionally connect your Athena account to Anthropic's Claude assistant using our connector. When connected, the content you access through Claude — including your monitored topics, news stories, prompt presets, and generated analyses — is transmitted to Anthropic and handled subject to Anthropic's own terms of service and privacy policy.

If you grant the story-voting permission on the consent screen, Claude can also record story votes (upvotes and downvotes) on your behalf. These votes are written to your Athena account exactly as if you had voted in the app: they are attributed to your user, count toward your organization's story feedback, and can be changed or removed at any time from your newsfeed. Claude records votes only during sessions you initiate.

The connection is authorized through OAuth with your explicit consent and is scoped to your organization: Claude can only access data visible to your Athena account, and there is no cross-organization data access. Access tokens expire after one hour and refresh tokens are rotated on each use. You can revoke the connection at any time by removing the connector in Claude's settings or from the Connected Applications section of your Athena settings page. After revocation, any unexpired access token remains valid for at most one hour.

For security, support, and abuse prevention, each tool invocation made through the connector is recorded in an internal audit log. Each record contains the tool name, the invocation status and error code (if any), the duration, a redacted summary of the request parameters (indicators of which filters were used, the selected preset, model override, and pagination values — not the text of your queries or filter values), your user and organization identifiers, the connector client identifier, and a timestamp.

How We Share Your Information

We may share your information in the following circumstances:

  • With Your Consent: When you explicitly authorize us to share your information.
  • Service Providers: With trusted third parties who assist us in operating our Services (data storage providers, email service providers, analytics services, and artificial-intelligence providers such as Google Cloud Vertex AI and OpenRouter — and Anthropic, if you connect Claude).
  • Business Transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of all or a portion of our business or assets.
  • Legal Requirements: When required by law, subpoena, or other legal process, or to protect our rights, privacy, safety, or property, or that of our users or others.

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

Sharing Reports with Colleagues and Clients

When you use our report sharing feature, we will share the content you select with the recipients you specify. These reports may contain:

  • News articles you've selected
  • Your comments and analysis
  • Topics and trends you've identified

Recipients will receive these reports via email with a link to view the content on our platform. The link will not require authentication to view, so please consider the sensitivity of information you include in shared reports.

Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law. We will securely delete or anonymize your personal information when it is no longer needed for these purposes.

Audit logs of tool invocations made through the Claude connector are retained for 12 months from the date of the invocation, after which they are deleted.

Depending on your location, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information, including:

  • Access: Request information about the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correction: Request that we correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
  • Deletion: Request that we delete your personal information.
